Yesterday, I posted an ad on craigslist to sell my XL Dog Crate for $75. (Brand new it is around $130)
Unfortunately, he ended up not liking the crate (even though I removed the door so he could go in and out whenever he wanted).
Anyway, it's been sitting in my garage for the past year and I decided to sell it so I could get some extra money for my cruise.
So, I posted the ad.
Yesterday evening I received a message from a lady asking if I would sell it to her for $45. I responded and told her that I could only go down to $60.
Here is her response:
I lost all my stuff in the fire my house my everything.. And now I am trying to get things I really need and start our life over again..so if no one gives you what you want for it maybe you can just let me buy it for $45.. That would really help us out..Our puppy misses his safe place, but his melted in the fire..Thank you for your time...
Ok, wow! I felt really bad for her and almost emailed her right away to say that I would give it to her for $45. But my roommate said I was crazy and that she was probably just using that as an excuse to get a discount. I asked my mom and she said she wasn't going to tell me what I should do and she wouldn't even tell me what she would have done in my place. I called Sarah and she said that if I need the money then I can do what's best for me but she also said that you can never go wrong with helping someone out and if she is lying then that's on her.
So I decided that I would try to sell it for $75 the rest of this week and at the family garage sale this Saturday and if no one bought it I would give it to her for $45.
I sent her an email telling her how sorry I am about her loss. I told her that I really need the money which is why I'm selling the crate in the first place but that if no one bought it by Saturday afternoon - I would give it to her for $45.
After I sent the email, I had an idea. I decided to look her up on facebook. And guess what? She lives in Georgetown. 45-60 minutes AWAY from where the fires were!!!! There was no mention on her facebook about losing her house in a fire. Seriously, someone would have at least posted some comment about it, right?
I felt so sorry for her and was actually considering going way down on the price and she was LYING!! What kind of person uses other people's tragedies to get a discount? Seriously? Who does that?
Some people... tsk tsk tsk.

I applaud your detective work.
Good job figuring out that she was lying. When it comes to selling stuff on Craigslist, I go with the policy that everyone trying to deal with me is lying about their situation to try and play on my sympathies. Little do they know, I have no sympathies.
Just kidding... I have some... but the few people I've dealt with on that site have made me really doubt the trustworthiness of buyers.

It's so sad that people will take advantage of an honest person using really terrible, terrible lie. It's good you figured it out.
I always err on the side of trust and figure if they're lying, they'll get theirs. kharma you know. I'm a pretty trusting person and honest too, so it makes me angry when someone takes advantage of that!
I don't understand it, either. Nice job figuring out that she was lying though! That sounds like something I would do. haha.
i used to love craigslist and now i feel like its been infested by sharks. or like a lake you used to love to swim in and now its filthy and you wouldnt even want to fish in it. ok, enough with the analogies. i just got a really bad taste in my mouth from when i was looking for work. it sucks that people are out there ruining a perfectly good resource ... that goes for sellers and buyers.

I've actually had 2 people use that exact same excuse on craigslist. I don't get why people are so stupid
It's horrible the lies people make up to cheat someone else out of something. I feel bad for the people that actually lost all their things because of those like this lady
Wow - I actually felt sick to my stomach - that's awful! Ugh - some people.
I'm not even sure what to say..People disgust me! And to think your first thought was to actually trust her and give her a break. That lady will get hers!
